Part Time - Police Radio Communications Officer

The Municipality of Bethel Park is accepting applications for a part-time police radio communications officer.  This is a 24 hour rotating shift position.  Duties involve:  Receiving and managing emergency and non-emergency calls for service.  Dispatching police, fire and emergency services personnel; data entry regarding all calls received, municipal building security monitoring. 

Qualified applicants must be a high school graduate or GED certified, have excellent verbal/communication skills, computer experience.  Various certifications required, as well as, criminal history clearance. The Municipality of Bethel Park, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (population 32,313) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Chief of Police for its Department consisting of 32 officers, 7 civilian support personnel and 29 school guards, which provides services to 13,659 households, as well as commercial areas.  Bethel Park is a Home Rule Municipality with a Council – Manager government.  Salary:  negotiable with fringe benefit package.  Equal Opportunity Employer.

Minimum Requirements - Ten years of practical police experience, with five years serving in a police supervisory or command position, demonstrating proven management and/or leadership ability in a similar public safety environment. 

Applicants must have or be able to obtain at the request of Municipal Council MPOETC Certification.  Also Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy and/or Penn State Police Executive Development Training Program (POLEX) preferred.  Bachelors Degree required, preferably in criminal justice, police sciences or a similar course of study.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:  budgeting, administration of discipline, public relations, evaluation of officers and civilian employees, preparation and maintenance of department policies and procedures, ability to use information technology employed by the police department, monthly reporting to Council, compliance with Civil Service Rules, cooperation with the Civil Service Commission and oversight of the Municipality’s emergency communication dispatch center.  A more detailed job description is available at or upon request to Municipal Manager. 

Bethel Park’s Home Rule Charter requires the Chief to report directly to Municipal Council and become a resident within one (1) year of appointment.
